Strip away the hype and only three things determine whether a powder builds muscle: total protein per dollar, leucine content (the amino acid that triggers muscle protein synthesis), and whether an independent lab has verified what's actually in the tub.

The evidence here is unusually settled. Which one is right for you

If you just want the most muscle per dollar, a standard whey concentrate blend is still the answer, and has been for twenty years. The marginal benefit of anything fancier is small enough that consistency matters more than the choice.

If dairy bothers you, go isolate before you go plant-based. Hydrolyzed and isolated whey have had most of their lactose stripped out, and many people who react to concentrate tolerate isolate without trouble. If you have a diagnosed milk-protein allergy rather than lactose intolerance, that is a different problem and isolate will not solve it — move to plants.

If you are plant-based, look for a blend rather than a single source. Pea is low in methionine, rice is low in lysine, and combining them closes most of the amino acid gap. Expect to take a slightly larger scoop to match whey's leucine content; that is the real cost of switching, not the price.

If you are eating in a deficit, prioritise a lean isolate with minimal added carbohydrate and fat. When calories are tight, the whole point of a shake is a high protein-to-calorie ratio, and a 300-calorie "protein" shake defeats it.

Is whey isolate worth the extra money over concentrate?

For most people, no. Isolate is a more refined product — more protein and less lactose, fat and carbohydrate per gram — but the difference in muscle gained is negligible once total daily protein is matched. Isolate earns its price in two specific cases: you react badly to lactose, or you are in a tight calorie deficit and want every gram of the scoop working. Otherwise the extra money buys marginally better macros, not better results.

Does plant protein build as much muscle as whey?

Close, if you account for the differences. Whey scores higher on DIAAS, the current standard for protein digestibility, and carries more leucine per gram. Studies comparing matched doses generally favour whey slightly; studies comparing matched total daily protein intake tend to find the gap shrinks or disappears. Does it matter when I take it?

Far less than the marketing suggests. The "anabolic window" was once described as 30–60 minutes post-workout; better-controlled research since has widened that to several hours, and total daily intake turns out to matter far more than timing around a session. What does “third-party tested” actually mean here?

Is more protein per scoop always better?

No — check the scoop size. A tub advertising 30g of protein per serving with a 45g scoop is a 67% protein powder. One advertising 24g with a 30g scoop is 80%. The second is the better product and probably the cheaper one per gram of actual protein. Comparing "protein per serving" across brands is close to meaningless unless you also compare what a serving weighs.
